Oskar Mielczarek de la Miel is the Managing Partner in charge of Rakuten’s growth venture investments comprising a variety of rapidly expanding disruptive industries such as Fintech, Mobility, Digital Media, Healthcare and Telecommunications. At Rakuten Capital, Oskar has spearheaded a global investment strategy with a diversified portfolio of innovative start-ups in North America, Europe and Asia, in close cooperation with Rakuten’s various business units. Previously, Oskar acquired extensive investment, advisory and operational experience in the financial industry, including investment banking and capital markets while at JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch, private equity and retail financial services in North America and Europe. Key investments sourced by Oskar include online lending platforms Bluevine, Upstart and Insikt, payment platforms Azimo and Currency Cloud, premium finance disruptor PremFina, Cyndx, a B2B SaaS search engine and Acorns, a millennial investment platform. Portfolio exits include WePay. In addition, Oskar is responsible for Rakuten’s mobility investments, including Lyft in North America, Cabify, in Spanish speaking countries, and Careem, in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as Europe’s on-demand delivery leader Glovo. Notable exits include Lyft and Careem with an IRR of 30%+. Oskar serves or has served as an active board member for all these companies. Most recently Oskar has been involved in sourcing key strategic investments for the deployment of Rakuten’s state-of-the-art 5G network. Recent investments include Fever, a millennial data-driven entertainment curation platform. Oskar earned his MBA at Harvard Business School and his BA at ICADE in Spain. Oskar is fluent in Spanish, French and Polish, and has strong command of Japanese. Oskar is an avid supporter of theatrical productions and wine culture.
